THE STATUS OF AGAMA ACULEATA ARMATA PETERS 1854, (REPTILIA: AGAMIDAE)

Abstract

Analysis of 591 small ground agamas of the Agama aculeata complex in the Transvaal and adjacent regions, reveals that two taxa can be distinguished by gular pattern. An examination of photographic slides of the type series of Agama armata Peters 1854 revealed a reticulate gular pattern, similar to the form occuring in the northeast of the region. Specimens from the southern and south-western region have a striped gular pattern, indicating a close relationship to aculeata. A comparison of the number of subdigital scales and precloacal pores showed no difference between the two forms. It is therefore proposed that Agama armata Peters be accorded full specific status.
