Abstract

A total of 52 chelonians (50 Geochelone pardalis, and a Chersina angulata and Pelomedusa subrufa were killed along an electrified fence in the Thomas Baines Nature Reserve, Eastern Cape. To prevent such high mortality it is recommended that the fence be maintained at a minimum height of 250 mm and it should operate intermittently, allowing time for tortoises to retreat.
