Abstract
This article presents a preliminary evaluation of some literary translations in Setswana. Three dramas are used for special reference, and are discussed only as far as they are translations. Their other aspects such as plot, characterization, style, theme and stageability are referred to only in cases where they have bearing on, or are affected by, the nature and quality of the translations. These dramas represent three major types of translations, namely literal translation, free translation as well as adaptation. They also illustrate the major achievements and shortcomings of this literary practice in Setswana. Therefore this article can as well be a general comment on literary translation in the language.
