Abstract

This publication describes a series of tests designed and inspected by the South African Forestry Research Institute to determine the performance of laminated pine railway sleepers, crossing and bridging timbers installed in South African Railways lines over a period of 13 years. The results showed that laminated pine sleepers, properly impregnated with creosote, will have an average service life in excess of 15 years.
