Abstract
Concerned with integrating language skills and literary studies in the broader context of academic development, this paper argues that constant change is an element of this context which generates both strength and stress. The paper focuses on the poetry component of the Introduction to English Language and Literature course (ELL103S) at UCT; traces changes over the past four years; assesses their positive and negative effects; and raises questions about the sustainability of constant change. Within the poetry curriculum changes are identified at four interrelated levels: materials, processes, interactions and relation to mainstream. The paper concludes the recognizing constant change as an element of the context of academic development is a necessary step towards promoting flexibility and growth while counteracting anxiety and confusion.
