Abstract
This study investigated YouTube’s effectiveness in the learning and preservation of the Yoruba language among youths of Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. Data was collected through a mixed-methods approach using a survey and content analysis. Findings demonstrate the awareness (85%) of opportunities for language learning and preservation on YouTube. Furthermore, most respondents (80%) had a positive attitude towards Yoruba language preservation and learning on YouTube. Further findings show a fragile relationship between how frequently participants watch different types of content on YouTube and how skilled they are in Yoruba. Results from the content analysis show that YouTube is a reliable source for learning and teaching Yoruba. The videos are engaging, beginner-friendly and clear. The study concluded that Yoruba language preservation and learning on YouTube is viable. However, negative attitudes and scepticism regarding the reliability and effectiveness of YouTube for language learning and preservation were noted. The study recommended that efforts be made to raise awareness about the resources available on YouTube for Yoruba language learning and preservation. Promotional campaigns, collaborations with educational institutions, and community outreach programmes can play a vital role in increasing awareness and encouraging learners to utilise YouTube as a language-learning tool.
