CAPTIVE BIOLOGY OF THE SHIELD-NOSED SNAKE (ASPIDELAPS SCUTATUS INTERMEDIUS)

Abstract

The shield-nosed snake is an unusual reptile which is rarely kept in captivity despite its placid nature. The first published data on the species' reproductive behaviour and feeding preferences is presented, including unusual female egg guarding behaviour. Aspects of general husbandry, particularly the problem of sexing specimens by probing, are discussed.
