Abstract

When Lovedale Press published Archibald Campbell Jordan's Ingqumbo Yeminyanya in 1940, the novel was soon hailed as a classic in the literatures of the Southern African languages. An English translation, The wrath of the ancestors, was published in 1980. To make the work accessible to an Afrikaans readership, an Afrikaans translation was embarked upon and eventually published in 1995 under the title Die toorn van die voorvaders. This article deals with some of the challenges that faced the translator and solutions to overcome these.
