Abstract

Characterization in the Zulu novel, Akuyiwe Emhlahlweni, is discussed on two narratological levels. On the first level (the story) the concepts actant, subject, object, receiver, opponent, helper and power form the centre of the discussion. On the second level (the text) individual characters are analysed, especially the main character; and attention is focussed on direct and indirect characterization. To conclude, a summary of the findings is given.
