Abstract

Venda has adopted a considerable number of words from other languages. However, the status which these adopted forms occupy in the language remains uncertain. There is always the fear that adoption may cause the language to lose its character. To address this fear, different views on adoption are discussed in this paper. A few remarks on the status of adoptives in Venda will also be made. The paper concludes by outlining certain factors which can be considered for the standardization of the many adopted words in the language.
