Abstract

Results of density, tracheid length and strength tests on Kenya-grown pines are presented. Results show an increase in all properties moving outward from the pith. A negative correlation of tracheid length with cambial growth rate is shown. Strength tests show a stronger correlation with distance from the pith than age. The possibilities of sampling techniques to obtain more precise correlations between timber properties and the controversial factors of age, distance from the pith and ring width, are discussed.
