The effect of fire on a small mammal community

Abstract

Information is provided on the survival of a small mammal community monitored before and after fire passed through part of a grassland study area. Praomys natalensis and Lem- niscomys griselda populations were not affected by the fire itself. Possible survival strategies are discussed. All the L. griselda survivors were retrapped in the unburnt grassland after the fire. Some of the P. natalensis survivors were re- trapped in unburnt grassland whilst some remained in the burnt area. Post-burn mortality of the latter group was high. Factors involved in post-burn habitat selection are discussed.
