Forage potential of Japanese radish (Raphanus sativus) as influenced by planting date and cultivar choice

Abstract

Japanese radish shows potential as a winter forage. If planted early (Dec/Jan.), high temperatures can damage seedlings. With late plantings (Mar./Apr.), the growing season can become a limiting factor. A study to establish the optimum planting date for warmer areas was undertaken. The production and incidence of flowering was determined for two seasons. The growth rate of early plantings decreased by April, while late plantings produced poor yields because of a restricted growing season. Establishment in February provided the highest yield coupled with relatively late flowering and sustained quality.
