Abstract

The important role of forestry in Germany in the care of the landscape, i.e. the environment in which man lives, is stressed. In Germany the prices of timber have remained fixed, or have even decreased, and production costs have risen. Forestry must, therefore, be rationalized or be justified on grounds of its welfare and cultural values. The shift of emphasis in South African forest policy, from commercial sawtimber production to general land-service based on the indirect values of forests, is foreshadowed.
