About the book

The Botanical Guide to the Local Wild Flowers of Rhodes Village and Neighbouring Valleys in the Cape Drakensberg offers a comprehensive introduction to the flora found around Rhodes Village in the Cape Drakensberg. Each selected plant is explored in detail, covering its taxonomy, historical background, horticultural appeal, and, where applicable, its medicinal and cultural significance.

This revised edition of the guide remains largely consistent with its predecessor, incorporating a small number of updates, new inclusions, and revisions reflecting recent botanical research on the plants of this region.

The Drakensberg Mountains are celebrated as a haven for wild flower enthusiasts. In the Cape Drakensberg, the eastern escarpment areas around Naudesnek and Tenahead are renowned among botanists and others passionate about wild flowers. These locations are prized for their reliable annual displays and diverse array of species, including the region’s iconic orchids.

This guide provides a general survey of wildflowers found and photographed in close proximity to Rhodes Village. The majority of the outstanding flowers featured have been documented on the Rhodes Commonage and in neighbouring valleys, including Kloppershoek, Carlisle’s Hoek, and Maartenshoek, as well as, to a lesser extent, along the waysides on the lower reaches of Naudesnek Pass. The wild flowers selected for this guide are easily encountered along valley roads and in ungrazed low-lying areas of local farms, with permission from landowners. As one ascends the passes or hikes to higher elevations, the vegetation transitions, revealing a distinct array of wild flowers – a subject to be explored in a future volume.
